You Want To Join a Clinical Trial. Here’s What To Know About the Hurdles.

KFF Health News reports that while many patients with chronic conditions say they'd join a clinical trial, most have never been offered the chance. A recent survey found 71 percent of those patients would be likely to participate, but two-thirds say their provider never discussed trials with them. Even when a trial exists, hurdles like location, eligibility, and costs often block enrollment, and up to 86 percent of trials fail to meet recruitment targets. The Department of Health and Human Services has announced an effort to streamline clinical research, and a bill in the Senate would let sponsors cover participants' expenses. But as patient advocates note, decentralized trials that let people participate from home are still not common.
