U.S. and Iran to hold Strait of Hormuz talks as ceasefire wavers
world
The U.S. and Iran have agreed to halt military strikes and will meet Tuesday in Doha to resolve their dispute over the Strait of Hormuz. According to Axios, both sides have committed to stopping all kinetic activity—military terms for strikes and attacks.
But the ceasefire, barely eleven days old, is already on shaky ground. Renewed strikes from both sides have erupted over competing interpretations of their memorandum of understanding, particularly regarding safe passage through the critical Strait of Hormuz. Under the deal, Iran promised to ensure commercial vessels can navigate the strait safely, while the U.S. lifted its blockade on Iranian ports.
A contributing problem: a military hotline between the U.S. and Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps—meant to coordinate traffic through the strait—still isn't working. The focus of Tuesday's talks has shifted from Iran's nuclear program to this immediate flashpoint.
