It Takes Three to Model Methane Right

science

Eos (AGU) reports that soil microbes capable of pulling methane from the air may be sequestering up to forty‑five gigatons of the gas each year—significantly higher than prior calculations. By combining process‑based, machine‑learning and atmospheric inversion models, the researchers narrowed the uncertainty and showed that this hidden sink could help balance global methane budgets. If incorporated into climate models, the updated sink could sharpen predictions of future warming trends.
