Portal Books Dedicated Falcon 9 Amid Constrained Launch Market

Payload Space reports that Portal Space Systems has purchased an entire SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to lock in its 2028 Motus Via Sol launch. The company will devote roughly half the fairing to its own Supernova bus and will sell the remaining half on rideshare slots through integrator Maverick Space Systems. CEO Jeff Thornburg said the acquisition gives Portal control over its orbital destiny in a market where launch windows are increasingly scarce. He emphasized the deal is intended to be cost‑neutral, not a profit drive, and will support the first flight of the FLARE‑powered Supernova bus. The move illustrates how startups are reshaping access to space as launch bottlenecks tighten.
