The August 17 outage, and the work ahead

dev_tools

GitHub is addressing a major outage on August 17 that disrupted services including Copilot and GitHub Actions for nearly eight hours. As The GitHub Blog tells it, the failure occurred when a critical infrastructure component in a Central US data center failed to scale during a peak in traffic. The company reports that monthly commits have grown from 1.4 billion to 2.9 billion since April, putting immense pressure on their systems. To prevent future crashes, GitHub is accelerating its migration to Azure and implementing stricter retry limits to avoid cascading system failures.
