California’s Drought Irreversibly Damaged Sacramento Valley Aquifers
science
A recent study has found that severe drought and overpumping between twenty twenty and twenty twenty-two caused some aquifers in California's Sacramento Valley to collapse. As Eos tells it, high-resolution satellite data shows that the sediment in these aquifers deformed irreversibly, meaning they can no longer store as much water as they once did. Researchers warn that this permanent loss of storage capacity could increase future flood risks because the ground can no longer absorb as much precipitation.
