Jason Arday press coverage: the volume of articles on this story should make editors reflect
other
The death of Cambridge academic Jason Arday has reignited calls for an inquiry into press standards, with his family saying the intense media coverage had a catastrophic impact on his life. The Conversation (UK) reports that an analysis of national newspaper print editions from late July to mid-August found two hundred forty-two substantive articles about Arday across fourteen publications, with The Times publishing the most. Coverage spiked after his resignation from Cambridge and again after his death, and included allegations of plagiarism, scrutiny of claims in his memoir, and commentary on the university's diversity efforts. Some columnists explicitly linked his appointment to race, while others questioned the volume of reporting itself. The analysis concludes that while some questions were legitimate, the penalty Arday paid was out of proportion to any offence he may have committed, and urges editors to reflect on their role in the firestorm.
