How Argentine politics is changing Milei

politics

Buenos Aires Herald notes that three years after his anti‑establishment rise, President Javier Milei is now courting former rival Mauricio Macri’s PRO party to secure governors for the 2027 race. The president, who entered office in December 2023 with little congressional support, has pushed an electoral reform bill that would scrap the primary elections known as PASO. A recent Universidad de San Andrés poll shows sixty nine percent of Argentines dissatisfied with the country’s direction and only thirty five percent approving of Milei’s government, yet his coalition still trails Peronism by just a few points. As of this week the administration says it has gathered enough votes to bring the reform to a Senate session before the end of the month, though insiders remain cautious.
