Supreme Court upholds grace period for late-arriving mail-in ballots
politics
According to Axios, the Supreme Court upheld a Mississippi law on Monday that allows mailed ballots to be counted if they're postmarked by Election Day but received within five business days. In a five to four decision, Justice Barrett wrote that 'the electorate's choice is made when voting is complete, not when ballots are received.' The ruling protects similar voting laws in other states heading into November's election—a decision sure to inflame President Trump's frequent criticism of mail-in voting. The Trump administration had backed the law's challengers, arguing that counting ballots received after Election Day undermines the integrity of federal elections. Four justices—Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh—dissented. The decision is one of three major election cases the Supreme Court is deciding this term.
