Supreme court goes against Trump in rulings on Fed firing of Lisa Cook, E Jean Carroll appeal and mail-in ballots – US politics live

The Supreme Court released major opinions, delivering a mixed verdict on the Trump administration's agenda. While the court affirmed that presidents can fire leaders of independent agencies, it ruled Trump's firing of Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook violated the Constitution. The court declined to hear Trump's appeal of a five million dollar civil verdict against him in the E Jean Carroll defamation case. And it upheld a state law requiring mail-in ballots to be counted if they arrive after election day. According to The Guardian, these decisions come after last week's rulings that allowed the Trump administration to restrict asylum access and strip temporary protected status from Haitians and Syrians.
