The show must go on: musical theatre cancellations lead to industry calls for urgent government help

entertainment

Three major productions—two Broadway musicals and a twenty-million-dollar opera—cancelled Australian shows this week, citing soaring production costs and weak ticket sales. Waitress, starring Rob Mills and Natalie Bassingthwaighte, ended its Melbourne run early and cancelled its planned Sydney tour. The cancellations are putting hundreds of theatre workers out of work. Industry leaders are now pressing the federal government for urgent tax reforms to keep live theatre viable, according to The Guardian.
