Iraq’s corruption crackdown is a start, not a solution

politics

Iraq's new Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has launched an anti-corruption crackdown, arresting forty-seven officials, according to Al Jazeera. The moves are welcome. But as Al Jazeera notes, there's a significant catch: the systemic corruption that enabled al-Zaidi's rise to power remains untouched. Arresting individual officials is one thing. Dismantling the institutions and power structures that breed corruption is far more difficult—and often politically inconvenient.
