Democratic states sue over Medicaid work rules

politics

According to Axios, twenty-five Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's new Medicaid work requirements rule. The states argue that exemptions for people unable to work due to illness are too narrow and violate administrative law. Starting January first, Medicaid beneficiaries must work or participate in approved activities for eighty hours each month to maintain their benefits. The states contend the rule contradicts the administration's earlier guidance and will immediately harm vulnerable Americans by straining safety net providers, increasing uncompensated emergency care, and putting rural hospitals at further risk of closure.
