Where does fat actually go when you lose weight? The answer is in your breath – and your sweat

health

The Conversation reports that when you lose weight, most of the fat you shed is actually exhaled. During a calorie deficit, fat cells release fatty acids that get broken down in the mitochondria, producing carbon dioxide that you breathe out. A smaller portion leaves as water through sweat, with some estimates suggesting about eighty-four percent is exhaled and sixteen percent is lost as water. So the next time you're trying to slim down, remember: you're literally breathing out the weight.
