Australia's bird flu response: Too little, but it's not too late

Australia has confirmed its first mainland case of bird flu in a mammal, after a long-nosed fur seal died from the virus, Phys.org reports. Health officials had previously kept the country's mainland free of mammal-to-mammal spread, making this detection a significant shift. Bird flu, formally avian influenza, has been spreading among wild bird populations worldwide in recent years, occasionally jumping to mammals.
