MAIA Air Sensor at Work in Addis Ababa

NASA Science reports that a rooftop air sensor in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is one of ten used by the Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols, or MAIA, to study the city's air quality. The sensors track particulate matter two point five micrometers or smaller, known as PM2.5, which is linked to millions of excess deaths globally each year. In Addis Ababa, black carbon from diesel vehicles and combustion is a major component, and the measurements reveal how pollution spikes during rush hour and holiday celebrations. NASA says the findings are relevant to cities worldwide, including in the United States.
