NASA Selects Caltech to Operate the Orbiting Carbon Observatories

Caltech News reports that NASA has selected Caltech to operate the Orbiting Carbon Observatory missions, OCO-2 and OCO-3, starting this fall. The two instruments—one a satellite, the other mounted on the International Space Station—track where carbon is emitted and where natural sinks like forests and oceans absorb it. Their data also helps assess crop health and ecosystem productivity, and will remain publicly available. Caltech has been involved with the missions since their inception, and operations will be run from campus and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which Caltech manages.
