GM vehicles under federal scrutiny after hundreds of reports

Federal regulators are expanding a safety investigation into more than one point one million General Motors vehicles after hundreds of reports of brake failure, Ars Technica reported on Monday. The problem affects many of GM's electric vehicles, as well as models built for Honda and Acura, and stems from a brake-by-wire system called eBoost that can suffer a spindle fracture. While GM says the car should retain antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control until it stops, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received reports of immediate loss of braking. The agency has logged two hundred twenty-seven incident reports, which grows to seven hundred forty-five when including those reported to GM, with twenty-two crashes and six injuries, but no fatalities.
