Tuesday briefing: Inside Shabana Mahmood’s new UK asylum reforms
politics
Last night, home secretary Shabana Mahmood unveiled new reforms to the UK asylum system. Under a new means-tested scheme, asylum seekers would be required to pay approximately ten thousand pounds toward their state-funded living costs or risk being denied settled status in Britain. Refugee charities have condemned the proposal, calling it a tax on those fleeing war, torture, and famine. The reforms also include plans to expand safe and legal asylum routes through employer sponsorship, addressing Labour backbench criticism about the absence of such routes, which have driven many toward dangerous Channel crossings.
