Sainsbury’s chief says grocery inflation not as bad as feared so far

business

According to Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts, grocery inflation in the UK is tracking below initial forecasts. The industry had braced for at least nine percent inflation by year-end, but Roberts suggested it could come in significantly lower. The supermarket chain has benefited from its price-matching strategy with Aldi, favorable weather, and the coincidental distraction of World Cup matches. However, Roberts warned there's still "pressure in the system" and acknowledged lingering uncertainty. The industry hopes for swift resolution to Middle East conflicts, which would further ease inflation pressures on food costs.
