Narrow ultrasonic beam enables stable 3D levitation six times farther than before

Phys.org reports that scientists have created an ultrasonic beam that can levitate and move tiny objects in midair for distances up to forty centimeters, about sixteen inches. Acoustic levitation, which uses sound pressure to suspend matter, now reaches roughly six times farther than conventional methods have achieved. The research, carried out by teams at the University of Tsukuba in Japan and the University of Bristol, appears in the journal Physical Review Letters.
