Supreme Court lets states ban trans girls from girls' sports

politics

The Supreme Court has ruled that states can prohibit transgender girls from competing on girls' school sports teams. The six-to-three decision upheld bans in West Virginia and Idaho, finding they do not violate Title IX or equal-protection rights. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the majority that the Constitution does not require an overhaul of women's and girls' sports throughout America. The three dissenters, led by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, argued the Court had decided the case prematurely without full facts, and warned the reasoning could extend to bathrooms, IDs, and gender-affirming care—giving the conservative movement a powerful template for coming fights. Both cases return to lower courts, though legal observers expect the decision to be cited immediately in similar pending disputes.
