SCOTUS rejects Trump's birthright citizenship policy

politics

The Supreme Court struck down President Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship today, affirming that anyone born on American soil is a U.S. citizen. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the five-justice majority, stressed that citizenship ensures participation in our political community. Trump's order would have limited birthright citizenship to children with at least one legally present parent—potentially affecting millions of babies and leaving some stateless. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented, arguing the policy aligned with the Fourteenth Amendment's original meaning. Notably, two of the five justices in the majority were appointed by Trump himself.
