A Labor of Love: <I>The Renaissance of Astronomy</I> by Noel Swerdlow Has Been Published Posthumously with Help from Friends and Colleagues

According to Caltech News, historian Noel Swerdlow—the world's foremost expert on Copernicus—spent nearly a decade at Caltech before his death in twenty twenty-one. His lifelong project, *The Renaissance of Astronomy*, has now been published posthumously, thanks to colleagues Jed Buchwald and Anthony Grafton. This more than eleven hundred page volume examines five Renaissance astronomers: Regiomontanus, Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, and Galileo. These figures accomplished something revolutionary—they replaced the geocentric model, where Earth sits fixed at the center of everything, with the heliocentric one that puts the Sun at the center. Swerdlow spent years researching and writing, but the manuscript remained unfinished at his death. Buchwald and Grafton spent four and a half years assembling his drafts, filling gaps, and completing missing sections. The finished work is a rigorous, beautifully illustrated exploration of how these five astronomers transformed human understanding of the cosmos and, by extension, laid the groundwork for modern science itself. Buchwald describes it as a masterwork destined to endure for centuries.
