Eos reports that scientists examined how dry air mixing into rising warm, moist plumes—known as entrainment—amplifies extreme wet‑bulb temperatures over extratropical continents. Using the ERA five reanalysis and the Community Earth System Model version two, they found that as the lower troposphere dries with warming, entrainment makes near‑surface air hotter and more humid, driving up the health‑critical wet‑bulb metric. Further research on dry‑air entrainment will be key to forecasting future wet‑bulb temperature rises.
