Syracuse University Seeks to Prevent Campus Rape Victim From Obtaining Police Records

Syracuse University is trying to block a rape survivor from obtaining decades-old police records she says would prove the school failed to boost security despite escalating campus crime in the 1980s. According to ProPublica, the woman, identified as Jane Doe, was attacked at knifepoint in a campus building in 1987 and is now suing under New York's Adult Survivors Act, which opened a one-year window for long-ago sexual assault claims. A judge sided with the university in February, sharply narrowing which records police must turn over, and her attorneys appealed that ruling in June. The university has until September twenty-third to respond to the appeal.
