DOOM Played on Series of 555 Timers
tech
Hackaday reports that an enthusiast has rebuilt the opening music from the 1993 game DOOM using only a chain of classic 555 timer ICs. The design starts with a 555 acting as a slow seven‑hertz clock, feeding a binary counter and decoder that step through fifteen positions. A diode matrix then maps each step to one of six musical pitches, which are generated by a second 555 whose timing is set by selectable resistor networks. While any modern microcontroller could play the chiptune, the project serves as a hands‑on exploration of digital logic fundamentals, reminding hobbyists that even the most complex sounds can emerge from simple components.
