‘Complicated and expensive’: Burnham is right about the risks of nationalisation | Nils Pratley

business

According to finance columnist Nils Pratley in The Guardian, Welsh Water's experience challenges the case for nationalizing Britain's water utilities. The company has been publicly owned and not-for-profit since twenty oh one, serving three million people with no shareholders. Yet after a quarter century, its performance on customer bills and spills remains middle of the pack—despite full control over its own surpluses. While it maintains high customer trust, Pratley concludes that public ownership isn't a panacea for the utilities sector's problems.
