Kiros ousts 15-term Colorado U.S. Rep. DeGette

politics

In Colorado's Democratic primary, twenty-nine-year-old progressive challenger Melat Kiros pulled off a stunning upset today, defeating fifteen-term incumbent Diana DeGette to secure the Democratic nomination in the First Congressional District. With forty-nine percent of the vote compared to DeGette's forty-four percent, Kiros will become the first Black woman to represent Colorado in Congress. According to the Associated Press, she prevailed despite the incumbent's significant financial advantage. Backed by Justice Democrats and endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, Kiros moves on to November's general election in this heavily Democratic seat. The victory signals rising anti-establishment momentum within the Democratic Party.
