‘Witch-hunt’ in Niger as military regime rounds up LGBTQ+ population
world
The Guardian World reports that Niger's military government is conducting a witch-hunt against LGBTQ+ people following a new penal code enacted earlier this year. Forty people have been arrested, with sixteen men — including high-ranking military officials — imprisoned across the country. The crackdown is raising alarm among human rights observers. There's also a public health concern: loss of access to PrEP drugs has raised fears of a resurgence of HIV and AIDS cases among an already vulnerable population.
