Researchers in South Africa have found evidence that Homo erectus was using fire between one million and one point eight million years ago—hundreds of thousands of years earlier than previously known. According to io9, the international team's findings suggest our distant ancestors mastered this transformative technology much sooner than the archaeological record had indicated.
