"Wake up call": House Democrats erupt in panic, anger after another socialist upset
politics
House Democrats are reeling after progressive representative Diana DeGette lost her Denver-based seat to twenty-nine-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros, who won by nearly ten percentage points. The surprise isn't that she lost—it's why. DeGette was no moderate: she backed Medicare for All, opposed ICE, and was a Trump impeachment manager. Kiros's winning critique was sharper: she attacked DeGette's corporate PAC funding and support for Israel. According to Axios, this is the third such primary upset in recent weeks, following losses by two other Democratic incumbents in New York last week. The party is fractured in response. Some Democrats like Ro Khanna welcome the shift as proof that 'the progressive movement is where the energy of our party is,' while others view it as a warning sign. Progressive groups are already targeting six more Democratic incumbents across Michigan, Florida, California, and Arizona.
