As a major heat wave grips the eastern US, here’s how to stay safe – and the heat stroke warning signs to watch for

health

A major heat wave is gripping the eastern United States right now, and it's more than just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous. According to Brian Bossak, a public health researcher at the College of Charleston, the key to staying safe is recognizing the warning signs early. Heat exhaustion typically starts with excessive sweating, weakness, dizziness, or nausea. If you or someone nearby experiences these, move to a cool place immediately, drink water, and cool your skin. Heat stroke is more serious and requires emergency help. Watch for confusion, loss of consciousness, a very high body temperature, hot red skin, or an abrupt stop in sweating. If you suspect heat stroke, call nine-one-one right away. The best defense is staying hydrated, taking regular breaks in air conditioning, and checking on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable cooling. Simple precautions now could prevent a medical crisis later.
