EU urged to exempt UK from car rules that could be worst Brexit impact yet

The European Union's new 'Made in Europe' regulations could deliver an unintended blow to British car manufacturers. The rules require cars and components to be made within the EU to qualify for subsidies and public procurement contracts. That shuts out the UK—even though British suppliers are integral to Europe's automotive industry. On Wednesday, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association called on Brussels to grant exemptions to the UK, Turkey, and Morocco. Industry observers are calling it one of the most spectacular own goals in trade history: rules designed to protect European manufacturing that instead exclude vital European partners.
