EFF Joins 60+ Groups Urging the UK to Halt Face Estimation at the Border

ai

The Electronic Frontier Foundation and more than sixty civil rights groups are urging the UK government to abandon a controversial artificial intelligence system for estimating the ages of asylum-seeking children at borders. According to their letter, the facial age estimation technology has critical flaws: it discriminates against women and people of color, and it has an error margin of about two point five years for exactly the sixteen to eighteen year-old group the UK wants to target. The groups also questioned whether the system was legally trained on children's data without proper consent, and pointed out the government hasn't released its testing results or impact assessments. The Home Office has until mid-July to respond to their request.
