‘Battle of Marolles’ commemorative plaque in Bruxelles, Belgium
world
In nineteen sixty-nine, Brussels authorities ordered fifteen hundred residents of the Marolles neighborhood to vacate their homes to expand the Palace of Justice. With no alternative housing offered, residents organized under the leadership of a local vicar, staging peaceful demonstrations that captured citywide support. Within weeks, officials abandoned the plan entirely. According to Atlas Obscura, this became known as the Battle of Marolles—a victory that fundamentally reshaped how Brussels conducts urban development. Today, citizen participation is mandatory in major projects; a principle born from this one neighborhood's refusal to be erased.
