Tricking an Air Conditioner Into Cooling

tech

Hackaday reports that maker GreatScott! found his air conditioner struggled to cool when the outdoor temperature fell after a heatwave. He attached a tiny heater to the outdoor heat‑exchanger’s temperature probe, tricking the control circuitry into a high‑gear cooling mode and restoring cold indoor air. While noting that high indoor humidity or an off‑spec condenser can also cause reduced performance, he removed the hack to avoid harming the unit. The experiment shows how a simple circuit can coax a heat pump to operate beyond its designed limits.
