A new version of the Petrov Day booklet

A new version of the Petrov Day booklet is out, just in time for the September commemoration. The author, writing on LessWrong, says they combined the best parts of four earlier versions and made several changes: adding a seventh candle for agriculture, removing a claim that the plague hampered scientific progress, and trimming the AI research papers to keep it accessible for friends who aren't focused on AI risk. The booklet also includes three new items for 2026, including the expiration of the New START treaty and an incident involving Hugging Face. The author estimates it takes sixty to eighty minutes to go through, and they're looking forward to their first Petrov Day this September. Petrov Day marks the 1983 moment when Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov chose not to report a false missile alarm, a decision widely credited with preventing a nuclear exchange.
