The Repair Nightmare that are Smart Rings
tech
Smart rings promise health insights on your finger, but getting inside one to fix it is a nightmare. According to Hackaday, packing advanced electronics into a device you wear constantly creates a repair minefield. Components are soldered together on densely packed circuit boards with no user-serviceable parts. An iFixit teardown of the Oura Ring 5 revealed a design that's more glued-together puzzle than device. Replacing a battery or fixing a sensor means the ring is likely headed for the landfill instead of a repair shop. As smart rings grow more capable and popular, the industry faces a growing tension: miniaturization and durability rarely go hand in hand. For consumers, it means treating a four-hundred-dollar wearable as a disposable gadget.
