Newport Beach is hosting an overwater fireworks display on July Fourth, and the Coast Guard has closed the surrounding waters to vessel traffic. According to the Federal Register, anyone looking to navigate the San Pedro Channel that day will need explicit authorization from the Captain of the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The temporary safety zone exists to protect both ships and the marine environment from hazards linked to the pyrotechnics.
