Young Indonesian couple publicly caned after kissing on TikTok

In Indonesia's Aceh province, a Sharia court has ordered the public caning of a young couple for violating Islamic law. According to The Guardian, the twenty-two-year-old man and twenty-five-year-old woman were convicted of kissing during a TikTok livestream without being married. They each received twenty-one lashes with a rattan cane in front of at least one hundred witnesses at a public park in Banda Aceh. The caning was carried out by robed figures in what represents Aceh's enforcement of its interpretation of Islamic law regarding unmarried couples.
