‘Stain on our history’: Starmer issues government apology over forced adoption scandal – UK politics live
politics
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a formal government apology for a forced adoption scandal that affected tens of thousands of families. Between nineteen forty-nine and nineteen seventy-six, an estimated one hundred eighty-five thousand babies were taken from unmarried mothers and placed for adoption in England and Wales. According to The Guardian, Starmer acknowledged that vulnerable young mothers were coerced, bullied, or misled into believing they had no choice but to surrender their children. He called the practice a stain on British history and said what happened to these families should never have occurred.
