According to Bruce Schneier, cybersecurity expert and security researcher, a new paper warns of mission creep in how policymakers frame policy problems. Issues ranging from misinformation to child social media safety, antitrust regulations, and anti-trafficking laws are increasingly being reframed as cybersecurity threats. Once positioned as threats amplified by technology, these diverse issues gain access to the politics of urgency and exceptionalism. The concern: this reframing invites troubling governance responses, as policymakers treat them with the exceptional measures normally reserved for existential threats.
