Vatican excommunicates six ultraconservative bishops over ordination

France 24 reports that the Vatican has excommunicated half a dozen bishops from the Society of St Pius X, an ultraconservative splinter group. The expulsion comes over their rejection of Vatican modernization efforts—particularly the church's embrace of interfaith dialogue and reconciliation with other Christian churches. The Vatican extended the threat to lay members who formally support the group.
