One Nation is campaigning directly to Christians. But will party policies rub against worshippers’ conscience?

politics

One Nation is making a direct appeal to Christian voters, anchoring its pitch to anti-abortion policies. The party recently recruited former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, who spoke at an anti-abortion rally in Sydney last month to sign up campaign volunteers. But there's a strategic mismatch at play. According to The Guardian, one in three Australian churchgoers were born overseas. For those immigrant congregations, One Nation's emphasis on a monoculture could undermine the anti-abortion appeal. Whether Christian voters will ultimately support the party despite this tension remains unclear.
