Why this July 4 weekend is a wildfire tinderbox
science
This July Fourth weekend, the nation's West faces a dangerous wildfire crisis, according to Axios. Extreme heat—with heat indexes reaching one hundred fifteen degrees—combined with severe drought has transformed the region into a tinderbox. At least forty-nine major fires are burning across thirteen states, with more than three hundred thousand acres already burned in Utah alone. The situation is dire enough that multiple states, from Colorado to Utah to Florida, have implemented fireworks bans. Wildfire activity is running one hundred fifty-seven percent above the ten-year average. Authorities warn that a single spark could ignite fast-moving blazes in areas already strained by extreme conditions.
