Before Amsterdam became the canal-threaded city of legend, it had to stop burning down. According to Works in Progress, the Dutch city pioneered the first organized fire department in the seventeen hundreds—a municipal innovation born from necessity in a densely packed, largely wooden metropolis. That institutional model spread across Europe and shaped how cities worldwide approached fire safety for centuries to come.
