On America's two hundred fiftieth birthday, NPR reporters across the country are asking a deceptively simple question: What does this country mean to you right now? The answers are as varied as the nation itself. Some are hopeful, others critical, still others uncertain. But the fact that Americans are pausing to ask the question at all speaks to an ongoing civic conversation. Two hundred fifty years in, the American project remains fundamentally about how we define ourselves, what we value, and where we're headed together.
