Watchdog warns of risks to patients as private equity’s stake in US healthcare grows

business

According to The Guardian, a watchdog group is sounding the alarm on private equity's rapidly expanding footprint in American healthcare. The Private Equity Stakeholder Project has documented over five hundred joint ventures pairing private equity firms with nonprofit healthcare providers—spanning rural hospitals, major religiously affiliated health systems, and hospice care networks. The concern is significant: these arrangements could enable profit extraction while care quality declines, harming patients, insurance payers, and healthcare workers. The watchdog group is calling for greater government oversight to safeguard against those risks.
