License plate cameras scan 20 billion vehicles a month, and cities are pulling the plug
tech
According to Boing Boing, automated license plate readers have quietly become one of the densest surveillance layers in the United States. Citing reporting from TechSpot, Boing Boing notes that these AI camera networks now log roughly twenty billion license plate scans every month, drawn from more than one hundred thousand readers nationwide. The vast majority of those cameras are sold by a single company, Flock Safety. The headline points to a countertrend, too: some cities are now moving to pull the plug on the systems.
